    Endoscope pickup of the root of TIG welded austenitic stainless steel tubes. At the first half of the video is a tube with 15 mm outer diameter. “Golden surface color”. With titanitrites on the root surface:The gold-colored surface of the root of the weld is produced by the use of purge gas of the inner tube with proportions of nitrogen and titanium in the base material. This causes titanium nitrides.And at the second half of the video is a tube with 18 mm outer diameter. “Silver surface color”. Without titanitrites on the root surface: The silver-colored surface is formed when a gas is used as a purge gas for the root side which does not contain any nitrogen components. Such as: argon, helium, or argon-hydrogen mixture. There is also no titanium nitride layer on the root surface when a base material containing no titanium is used. Titanium nitrides on the inside of the tube are not permitted, for example, in the pharmaceutical and food sector.The weld seams are exercises of my training participants.The blue color is from the light of the LED´s.Thanks for watching!     Hydroforming – free from dies and the factory environment. Using a household pressure washer and simple welding tools can make some easy form shapes for many uses. More planning than shown here could better account for shrink and stretch of the part as pressure fills. This is a great way to make simple one-off metal containers or any of the numerous structures that can allow for variance in size or tolerance. Mufflers & exhaust tubes, sound tubes, funnels, conical structures and reducers, oil & fuel tanks are all potential applications for this simple process. Compound curves that are formed using this technique, could be cut out as needed & used as components in other welded structures. My pressure washer is old, tired and leaks like a sieve. It likely only makes about 700 PSI maximum. A new machine with a 2500 or 3000 PSI pump could likely bend much heavier gauge steel. Use caution to purge compressible air from the structure prior to reaching full PSI, thereby minimizing the risk of structure failure combined with the venting of high pressure at high velocity and possible shrapnel. I didn’t use a saftey blanket like I’d planned, because the thin steel I chose for this experiment formed so easily. I should have. Thicker steel and 100% welds will result in very high pressures inside the part. Be safe!
